Modeling How We Want Students to Practice
Maynard, Lisa M.
Teaching Music, v13 n1 p38 Aug 2005
All music teachers want their students to learn good practice techniques. However, more often than not, teachers tend to think of practice as separate from the lesson or rehearsal. The topic may come up at the end of or during a lesson or rehearsal, but the time they devote to it is often very little. They tend to assume that the "pearls of wisdom" they pass on in their lessons and rehearsals will be absorbed by their students, taken home with them, and used in their practice sessions. However, they sometimes forget that good practice techniques must be reinforced to help students learn to practice independently and efficiently. Therefore, it is important that they think of ways to incorporate and model ideas for effective practice regularly during lessons and group rehearsals. In this article, the author provides some suggestions for incorporating methods for practicing into teachers regular teaching day.
