Introducing an Elementary Design Challenge into a TECA Regional Competition: There Is a Place in the Early Years of School for Teaching about Technology
Linnell, Chuck
Technology Teacher, v65 n2 p23 Oct 2005
Each year the TECA (Technology Education Collegiate Association) Eastern Regional conference is held in Virginia Beach, Virginia. TECA is made up of four regions of the United States. The eastern TECA region has the largest membership. From up and down the eastern U.S., students and faculty from colleges' and universities' technology education departments come to the Virginia Beach Convention Center to compete, network, and generally have a good time interacting. In February 2005 there were 14 institutions with over 300 students in attendance at TECAeast--a new record! Students and faculty prepare for this annual event with precision and care. During the conference, six TECA events are sponsored: (a) a teaching lesson contest; (b) a communication contest; (c) a transportation contest; (d) a manufacturing contest (e) a technology challenge; and (f) a problem-solving contest. The winners of these events can compete at the national TECA competition, which is held at the annual ITEA conference. Along with these national events, TECAeast has included four regional events: (a) an automated systems design challenge (b) an instructional modules contest (c) a TECA poster session contest; and (e) a new elementary competition.
