This article reports on the entry by the political opinion journal Washington Monthly in ranking U.S. colleges and universities. The journal purported to rank colleges on the contributions of their graduates to the nation. If it stays in the game for the long haul and modifies its rankings--as U.S. News seems to do annually--in a serious attempt to measure graduates' civic contributions, the Washington Monthly effort might prove interesting. Although some prestigious colleges and universities that didn't fare well immediately pointed out flaws in the Monthly's methodology, any serious effort to shift the national focus away from individual graduates' earning power and toward the broader contributions of the nation's college graduates to society would seem to be a positive move.
