From the start of the year, the author's goal is to teach his students to be metacognitive thinkers. This means that they will think about what they are doing during each step of the inquiry process. The author uses a variety of methods to enculturate students into using the thinking processes and developing the dispositions necessary for them to be successful in science. One effective approach is the creation of a "Thinking Bulletin Board." This classroom exemplar demonstrates the types of questions students should ask themselves while designing and conducting an investigation to scientifically solve a problem. Each year this board evolves as the author learns more about the way the middle school mind works and as the problems students solve become more complex.
