Reading comprehension skills promote achievement in science, so how can teachers help students to develop these skills? Research indicates that students who read well are more likely to be successful in school and in life (Belk 1999). Furthermore, there is a direct link between science skills and reading skills (Carter and Simpson 1978). There are also similarities between science process skills and reading comprehension skills (Padilla, Muth, and Lund Padilla 1991). In science, students investigate a problem and collect data; in reading, students ask questions and take notes. In science, students interpret data and communicate results; in reading, students think inductively and deductively and arrange information logically. In science, students draw a conclusion for their experiment; in reading, students analyze critically and identify main ideas (Martin, Sexton, and Gerlovich 2001). Science and reading are related; hence, effective reading and comprehension skills impact achievement in science.
