One of the author's main goals as a teacher is to impart the skills necessary for students to be successful in science, and that means teaching them how to think and write like scientists. At times, though, it seemed as though the author had exhausted all avenues without ever reaching this goal. At the beginning of each year, she starts her students on the path to writing effective lab reports. She devotes a wealth of time to proper lab report format and content and require that students practice writing complete, replicable procedures. The author equips them with a guidelines sheet, rough draft template, and detailed scoring rubric. Success? Not quite. Despite her efforts, the majority of students were still unable to write detailed, complete lab reports by midyear. Just when the author thought she had tried everything, she came across yet another strategy-model analysis. This strategy-model analysis is described in this article. (Contains 3 figures.)
