Science Scope, v27 n8 p27-29 May 2004
Middle school students can be apprehensive toward the subject of science because, "we give them the message that science is the most important of subjects" (Flannery 1993). Why not consider using humor proactively as an effective teaching resource in the science classroom? The use of appropriate content-related humor can initiate and liberate thinking, reduce academic anxiety, promote the retention of academic material, and increase student satisfaction (Shade 1996).This article describes the use of three humor activities designed to help teach various science concepts to middle school students. Although science is, by nature, a serious business, each activity will help students identify and explain the concepts taught while enjoying themselves in the process! This article discusses: Teaching classic laws through classic comedy; Brains illustrated; and Creative cartooning.
