Fish dissections are a great way to introduce the concepts of food webs, predator-prey relationships, and ecosystems, but these labs are expensive, messy, smelly, and require a lot of supervision because of the tools involved. The author has developed an inexpensive, safe, and clean alternative where students "dissect" simulated fish stomachs--rubber gloves filled with a jelly-like substance that contains plastic animal and plant parts. The activity requires students to use inquiry, prediction, and teamwork to determine what fish eat and where they fit in the food web. This activity can be tailored to include freshwater or saltwater species native to specific areas. After a small initial investment, the materials can be recycled for use year after year.
