Looking at Density From Different Perspectives

All too often middle school students equate density with one object simply being "heavier" than another. Even if students are able to accurately calculate the density of an object, that doesn't necessarily mean that they fully understand the concept of density as the ratio of mass to volume. To help change this misconception and more fully develop the idea of density, the author has her students explore the concept from five different perspectives: (1) same volume with different mass; (2) same volume with different units; (3) same mass and same volume, (4) same mass with different volume; and (5) different mass and different volume. Students also complete a performance assessment activity to demonstrate using density to determine the identity of unknown substances.
