A Day at the Beach, Anyone?
Fredericks, Anthony D.; Childers, Julie
Science and Children, v41 n9 p33-37 Jul-Aug 2004
Effective field trips require planning, preparation, and follow-through upon returning to school as well as coordination between the host site, school, and chaperones. The authors have come up with a tried-and true planning timeline and a few suggestions to help make the next trip to the shore worthwhile. If the reader does not live close to an ocean, the tips can easily be adapted for use with field trips to other sites, such as a lakeshore or desert. Let students know the reasons for the trip, what they can expect to discover there, how the planned trip relates to information discussed in class, and a few potential highlights. For many children, the trip may be their only journey to the seashore, so they should be actively engaged in the dynamics of planning. A list of 12 resources and 4 Internet resources are also provided.
