It's a Small World After All
Jones, M. Gail; Broadwell, Bethany; Falvo, Michael; Minogue, James; Oppewal, Thomas
Science and Children, v43 n2 p44-46 Oct 2005
As one of the authors was warning the fifth-grade class about protecting clothes from spills in the lab, one student commented that his pants wouldn't stain because they were covered with some "nano stuff." The class tossed water on the pants and watched it bead up and roll off "like magic." The class's interest was piqued, and the questions began--always a good jumpingoff point for inquiry! The next day, the student brought in the tag from his pants--written on the tag was "Nano-Care: A Nano-Tex Innovation." The author knew nanotechnology would be a great hook for the students and immediately went out and purchased a stain-resistant shirt for us to "experiment" on. What began as a simple reminder to students blossomed into a scientific investigation examining the efficacy of an innovative technology. Students and teacher researched the technology that makes this fabric stain-resistant, then tested the degree to which a treated fabric was resistant to common staining agents.
