A Call for More Instrumental Music Teaching Research

In this article, the author argues that researchers and practioners aiming to improve practice in our institutions are called upon to "open up" the field of instrumental teaching. Music educators need to reflect on how particular lesson behaviours or types of teacher-pupil interactions are influenced by the specific institutional, social, and cultural contexts in which they are situated. Equally important is the question of how instrumental music teachers construct the various contexts in which they work. It is hoped that this brief article might initiate further discussion on the issues raised.
