"Concourse and Periphery" in Perspective: Well Past Planning
Ostrowitz, Judith
American Indian Quarterly, v29 n3-4 p384-425 Sum-Fall 2005
This paper contains the full text of an article first published in 2002, about a year and a half before the completion of the National Museum of the American Indian building on the mall in Washington DC and well before the celebrations that accompanied the opening of its doors to the public on September 21, 2004. That essay concentrated upon the enormity of the task to develop an architectural program, as well as upon ideas generated very early on for appropriate exhibition and operation strategies. It is the authors intentions to revisit through this article, in order to discover how concepts and recommendations were realized and to trace something of the relationship between ideals and reality for the construction of this institution. The author has added a postscript to the original article that addresses some of the final forms with some observations on these results to date. (Contains 5 figures and 66 endnotes.)
