"Parents: the Anti-Drug" is a public service campaign developed on the premise that parents are the most influential adults in a child's life, at any age. Action is the operative term in these announcements. The parent is not influential in a quiet, reserved role nor as one who moves aside for others to deal with education of the child. The parent takes action to meet the problem. In support of literacy and information inquiry, is there a role for the parent? Assuming that the parent has an understanding of his or her child's abilities and that the parent has a basic understanding of the emerging challenges of the Information Age, are there actions the parent can take to be a constructive contributor to the student's growth in selection and use of information? This article describes techniques and strategies that, if implemented, can help lead to effective actions on the part of at least one parent or guardian, which, in turn, can have a positive educational impact on a child's academic success.
