Multicultural Literature: A Source of Meaningful Content for Kindergartners
Quintero, Elizabeth P.
Young Children, v60 n6 p28-32 Nov 2005
Schools are rushing to respond to the push by state boards of education and other credentialing bodies to increase the teaching of content-area knowledge at all grade levels--including kindergarten. In this article, the author contends that it is possible to address content in subject-area learning in kindergarten while acknowledging the cultural and historical backgrounds of children and respecting their choices of activities. Using children's literature in teaching through problem posing nourishes an integrated curriculum that supports young children's meaningful learning. This method encourages learning that is both developmentally and culturally meaningful. This article explains the concept of "balanced literacy"--an approach that includes specific involvement strategies such as a writing workshop, a reading workshop, shared reading, and read-alouds.
