Moore, Michele
Gifted Child Today, v28 n4 p40-47,65 Fall 2005
It is likely that all kindergarten teachers will have a young gifted reader in their classroom at some point in their career, and they must be prepared to meet the needs of this very special population. After researching the literature in this particular field, the author defines the characteristics and instructional needs of young gifted readers, offers guidance on how to identify such students, and curriculum modifications that may be necessary to accommodate more advanced level students. Also provided are suggestions on how to choose appropriate reading materials for young gifted readers, methods that educators can use to ensure authentic assessment of these students' reading abilities, and a list of further resources for educators of young gifted readers.
