Folk Taxonomies. Connected Classroom
Bull, Glen
Learning & Leading with Technology, v33 n1 p22-23 Sep 2005
Early in the 1990s, Tim Berners-Lee had a powerful idea--the concept of the World Wide Web. The success of this vision produced an unparalleled explosion of information, which in turn resulted in a parallel problem--how to locate the right piece of information. A 2005 study by Hanson and Carlson, published by the Educational Development Center, identified the time required to locate resources as the number one factor affecting teachers' use of the Web. This brief column describes several strategies and tools that can be used for identifying useful information. The social bookmarking tool "del.icio.us" and the image site "Flickr" are examples of tools that allow users to assign their own descriptor to links and images. The patterns that emerge can be described as "folk taxonomy" or collective categories created by the lay populace. These two bookmarking tools are described in this article.
