Keeping Kids in School: The Power of CTE

One of the critical goals of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) federal legislation is to raise student achievement. The first thing to do, is ensure that the students are actually in school. If students leave school prematurely, schools will not be able to help them master the skills thought to be necessary in the workplace or in future education. Preventing students from leaving school before graduation is therefore the necessary first step to increasing student achievement. Career and Technical Education, because of its ability to engage students hands-on, has long been thought to have a role in reducing dropout rates among high school students. Until recently however, there has been little data to support this claim. A recent study from the National Research Center for Career and Technical Education that gained national recognition on this topic looked at CTE as a proportion (ratio) of the total high school experience. This study showed that the greater the percentage of CTE in a student's total course load, the lower the probability that the student would drop out. This was especially true for lower-ability youth. However, an overemphasis of career and technical education courses, at the risk of academic courses, may increase the risk of dropping out.
