This article argues that traditional approaches to career counselling have been rendered inadequate by postmodern developments. The postmodern condition is characterised by flux, unpredictability, uncertainty, and the social dislocation of the self. The postmodern self is multiple and polyphonic; it can take on many voices depending on the situation and time. Those at the bottom of the social hierarchy bear the brunt of the negative consequences of these changes. Career counsellors should adopt a reflexive approach to their work. Reflexivity entails an ongoing reflection on the social and political ramifications of one's practices. Social constructionist and hermeneutic approaches are introduced as appropriate theoretical and research frameworks for career work in the context of rapid social and cultural change. The article concludes with brief recommendations for research and practice.
