The changes in living arrangements of elderly South African women when they become eligible for pension is documented in detail. Once a woman becomes pension-eligible, the number of co-resident women in their 30s are reduced and children below 5 years increase. The elderly woman assumes a caretaker role for her grandchildren in return for support by their mother.
