Against the Boards: Reflecting on My Youth
McDonald, John
Reclaiming Children and Youth: The Journal of Strength-based Interventions, v14 n1 p2 Spr 2005
In this article, the author reflects on his youth. He recalls many things including his early knowledge that he was not like the other students in his school--he was a dreamer. He states that he became a man much too soon, forced to put aside childhood and assume the roles and responsibilities of "the man of the house." Having a strong-willed matriarchal family, however, the title was purely ceremonial. Nonetheless, the cruel poverty and isolation soon began to take a toll upon my still-developing mind, and survival soon replaced creative dreaming. In this article, the author discusses the importance of individuality.
