Preferences of Individuals with Visual Impairments for the Use of Person-First Language
Bickford, James O.
RE:view: Rehabilitation Education for Blindness and Visual Impairment, v36 n3 p120 Fall 2004
Over the past two decades, professionals in the fields of education and rehabilitation of people with disabilities have adopted person-first language, that is, language that subordinates the disability to the individual. This shift in language reflects the importance society places on sensitive issues and on changing stereotypes and reducing bias against those with disabilities by foregrounding not the disability but other personal attributes. The author investigates the preference for person-first and disability-first language among adults who are visually impaired and blind.
