In the original ThinkQuest Junior competition back in 2000, a fifth grade girl at P.S. 56 in New York City won a gold award for creating a Web site entitled "Growing up with Epilepsy" (http://library. thinkquest.org/J001619/). Spurred on by her teacher, Neme Alperstein, 10-year-old Alyssa crafted an incredibly rich and comprehensive resource on the disease she had lived with since age six. The site explains what epilepsy is, talks about how it's treated, includes a movie on Alyssa's visit to her neurologist, features an animated neuron and the youngster's own (heartbreaking) pictorial depiction of a young girl with probes attached to her forehead. Perhaps most powerful of all, though, were the guest book where others could share their experiences and Alyssa's personal diary. This article contains excerpts from Alyssa's personal diary.
