Bounce Back in Boston: Attendance Approaches 2003 Levels--Council Spotlights Salinas Issue
Library Journal, v130 n3 p16 Feb 2005
This article gives the details of the the American Library Association (ALA) Midwinter Meeting, held January 14-17 in Boston. The meeting showed a bounce back in attendance. The total count was 13,232, including 10,028 registrants and 3,204 exhibitors, an increase from 2004 San Diego totals of 10,788, 7,944, and 2,844, respectively. Still, the 2003 meeting in Philadelphia drew a larger crowd: 13,664 attendees, including 10,254 registrants and 3410 exhibitors. The Hynes Convention Center, attached to two malls and several hotels via internal walkways, proved convenient, as visitors were not forced to brave Boston's cold. The bi-level show floor, however, drew mixed reactions. Unlike in past years, there was less of a highly charged atmosphere regarding national or international issues. (Remember CIPA? Cuba?) Notably, ALA Council voted to "strongly oppose" closure of the Salinas Public Library, CA (see News, LJ 1/05, p. 19), and encouraged Salinas citizens and officials to find "alternative" ways to support its library.
