A Learning-Center Solution for Using Technology in Elementary Music
Casey, Amy C.
Teaching Music, v12 n4 p50 Feb 2005
The challenge for educators today is to overcome this barrage of media and technology and find innovative ways to help students learn. But, how can teachers compete for student attention when this is the challenge? How can they improve learning experiences and make them relevant to our students' lives? Integrating technology into the music classroom can help meet these challenges. Music educators often find themselves at the cutting edge of educational issues. Authentic assessment is nothing new to them, as they have been using performances for years to evaluate student achievement. Many of them are quite adept at meeting the needs of students with different learning styles. Singing, playing instruments, musical games, and movement activities are often on the daily menu in their classrooms. These activities naturally accommodate various learning styles. They are no strangers to the constructivist approach to learning, either. Their students build on concepts relating to music notation and duration, among others, to compose music of their own. It is, therefore, typical to expect music educators to be leaders in using educational technology. Although it is now more feasible than ever to integrate technology into classrooms and curricula, there are still many issues to address such as funding and training.
