Middle school choral students and their teachers can benefit from studying and performing a musical. The students can apply their vocal skills to the exploration of this important genre of American music. Outstanding chores members will have opportunities to perform as soloists and to master dramatic roles. The teachers can express themselves creatively by arranging the music to accommodate the vocal abilities of their students, and they will grow professionally by developing new skills in areas such as staging, lighting, and choreography. To successfully learn and perform a musical at the middle school level, choral directors need to overcome several significant challenges. These challenges include finding adequate rehearsal and preparation time and working with the vocal limitations of middle school singers. The choral director must have the confidence and expertise necessary to arrange the music. In addition, learning about and becoming involved with the extra-musical aspects of this endeavor can often seem overwhelming. This article offers suggestions and strategies designed to creatively address the vocal needs and limitations of middle school singers within the context of studying and performing a musical.
