Exercise: A Prescription for At-Risk Students
Putnam, Stephen C.; Tette, Joseph; Wendt, Michael
Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (JOPERD), v75 n9 p25 Nov-Dec 2004
Accommodation requirements for special-needs populations, and administration and taxpayer concerns about current fiscal realities, dovetail with the benefits of physical education programs that promote life skills, such as regular aerobic exercise. At Wilson Schools in New York, administrators have implemented an ongoing, before-school, exercise lab program for academically at-risk children. A $370,000 federal Physical Education for Progress (PEP) grant allowed Wilson school administrators to install commercial-grade fitness facilities in two elementary schools and one combined middle/high school. This proactive intervention program can serve as a model for school administrations who are influenced by recent research suggesting that exercise has positive long-term effects on academic achievement and behavior. The program has been recognized for its innovative qualities and excellence. This article thoroughly examines the Wilson program and offers suggestions for educators who wish to develop similar programs.
