A Vision--Community
Circle, David
Teaching Music, v12 n2 p5 Oct 2004
Many books have been written about leadership. Every author approaches the subject from his or her own perspective and emphasizes different qualities leaders must have to be effective in the particular environment or type of work in which they are engaged. There is consistency, however, in many of the characteristics leaders should possess. Leaders are communicators, motivators, and team builders who are trustworthy, passionate, consistent, competent, and visionary. Vision is the attribute that gets the most space and ink. Warren Bennis, in On Becoming a Leader, says, "The first basic ingredient of leadership is a guiding vision." In The Will to Govern Well, Glenn Tecker says, "Absent a vision ... an association can exist only in a constantly reactive mode." MENC is the largest arts organization in the United States. It is also an umbrella organization with literally dozens of subpopulations, each with a special interest in music education or a unique geographical identification. Members of MENC are one profession, a large community of music educators that needs to be unified by the passion for art and teaching. Indeed, members must be a unified music education community in order to meet and successfully overcome future challenges.
