Reconceiving the Standards and the School Music Program
Reimer, Bennett
Music Educators Journal, v91 n1 p33 Sep 2004
Music offerings in United States schools have remained largely the same for well over half a century. Basic program consists of general music classes up to and sometimes through middle school and elective performance opportunities in upper elementary grades through high school, primarily focused on band (including jazz groups), orchestra, and chorus, with some additional offerings occasionally available. Supporting this basic program is an elaborate edifice consisting of undergraduate teacher education programs; graduate degrees through the doctorate; thriving research and scholarship; theoretical and practical literature in a wide array of journals and books; an energetic national organization and vital state organizations; countless meetings, conferences, workshops, and special events; active support from the music industry and other interested groups; and international links to similarly devoted people all over the world.
