Use of Image and Metaphor in Developing Vocal Technique in Choirs
Skoog, William
Music Educators Journal, v90 n5 p43 May 2004
This article discusses how training singers to visualize images in rehearsals can help them to develop a beautiful and flexible tone. Choral directors try to develop a full, vibrant, health), vocal sound in young choirs, striving for a tone that is tension-free yet resonant and appropriately, developed. There is no single route to this goal, but there are a number of approaches that when combined, effect desired changes in the sound of the choir, in this article, the author provides some exercises revolving images and metaphors that are designed to develop a health); more opulent, and free choral sound. The author follows the Western ideal of vocal sound and will not specifically address sounds with unique cultural, ethnic, or regional idiosyncrasies. Several of the techniques discussed, however, could be used to enhance vocal health in non-Western staging styles. A suggested list of further reading is included along with 5 notes.
