Torn between Two Worlds: Overcoming Resistance to Second-Language Learning
Ariza, Eileen N.
Clearing House, v77 n3 p105 Jan-Feb 2004
In this article, the author discusses Steven, a classic example of an individual who was torn between two cultural worlds. His mother was Puerto Rican, but she was raised in upper New York State. She and his birth father divorced, she remarried, and the family moved to Puerto Rico, because the company for which Steven's Anglo stepfather worked was based there. Suddenly, his mother was speaking Spanish, a "foreign" language, to him. The author discusses "learner receptivity," helping students to relax and get involved with their own learning, and how she used this technique to help Steven deal with his situation.
