Gliding Glissade Not Grand Jete: Elementary Classroom Teachers Teaching Dance
Dunkin, Anne
Arts Education Policy Review, v105 n3 p23 Jan-Feb 2004
Ongoing arts education issues for dance educators concern the role of elementary school classroom teachers as dance facilitators in their classrooms, the parameters of such a role, and whether or not university dance departments can prepare them to fill it. This article presents both the author's perspectives on meeting this challenge and the expressions of non-dance specialist preservice teachers preparing to teach dance within the context of the university. It will not address the multifaceted aspects of what does or should constitute either the curriculum of children's dance education in elementary schools or the content of a course for preservice teachers to teach it. Rather, it will attempt to illuminate current conditions of and feelings about dance in elementary education as expressed by some of its future practitioners. Their words describe their prior experiences and dance knowledge, their aspirations, their sense of confidence and preparation, and finally, obstacles that they anticipate they will have to transcend.
