Using Alternate Forms of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale: Caveat Emptor
Hubley, Anita M.; Wagner, Shannon
Social Indicators Research, v65 n2 p167 Jan 2004
This study examined whether Forms A and B of the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale (MHLCS) are parallel by comparing (a) mean performance on the internal, powerful others, and chance subscales, (b) the internal consistency and one-week test-retest reliability estimates for each of the subscales, (c) the intercorrelations among the subscales, (d) the relationship between self-rated health status and each of the subscales, and (e) the fit of the three-factor structure for the MHLCS proposed by Wallston et al. (1978) using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). A non-clinical sample (N = 245) was used. Overall, the results of the study do not support treating Forms A and B of the MHLCS as parallel or exchangeable forms. Directions for further revisions to the MHLCS are proposed based on both the present study as well as findings from the literature.KEY WORDS: alternate forms, factor analysis, health, locus of control, reliability
