The Development of Geographic Categories and Biases.
Kerkman, Dennis D.; Friedman, Alinda; Brown, Norman R.; Stea, David; Carmichael, Alanna
Journal of Experimental Child Psychology, v84 n4 p265-85 Apr 2003
Examined geographical representations among children and young adults. Found that a distinct home region was apparent at age 9. At age 11, children divided North America into regions the same as university students. Children used new location information to update location estimates. Children preserved ordinal structure of initial location estimates for home region cities but relied on regional prototype locations to adjust estimate in less familiar regions. (Author/KB)
