Tutor and Student Assessments of Academic Writing Tutorials: What Is "Success?"
Assessing Writing, v8 n2 p110-34 2002
Characterizes successful writing tutorials by employing a hybrid methodology, interactional sociolinguistics, combining conversation-analytic and ethnographic techniques. Notes that associated with perceived success were conversational turn structure, tutor mitigation of directives, simultaneous laughter, affiliative overlaps, and small talk. Recommends that tutor preparation emphasize less idealized, more pragmatic, conceptualizations of tutor roles. (PM)
