Cognitive theory and empirical studies of workplace routines were used to construct a metacognitive theory suggesting that work can be conceptualized as routines and the concept of routines can be taught. This approach builds on commonalities in workplace knowledge that are related to metacognition rather than simple cognition. (Contains 54 references.) (SK)
