Mothers' Generalized Beliefs about Adolescents: Links to Expectations for a Specific Child.
Buchanan, Christy M.
Journal of Early Adolescence, v23 n1 p29-50 Feb 2003
Used mothers' generalized beliefs about adolescents to predict mother's expectations for her own sixth- or seventh-grader's adolescent years. Found that generalized beliefs predicted mother's expectations even after accounting for the adolescent's current attributes. Greater beliefs that adolescents are upstanding/prosocial predicted greater expectations for a closer parent-child relationship during adolescence. The link between beliefs and expectations did not vary by the child's pubertal development or gender. (Author/KB)
