Acquisition of Multiple Languages among Children of Immigrant Families: Parents' Role in the Home-School Language Pendulum.
Mushi, Selina L. P.
Early Child Development and Care, v172 n5 p517-30 Oct 2002
This study examined immigrant parents' role in young children's language learning in various linguistic contexts, focusing on how parents helped their children learn English while maintaining their mother tongue. Findings of questionnaires, observations, and interviews indicated factors supporting children's learning, including parents' interest in the two languages, joint parent-child activities, and direct, child-parent linguistic exchange. Problems included parents' low English proficiency and lack of links between home and school learning. (Author/KB)
