Barriers to Literacy for Language-Minority Learners: An Argument for Change in the Literacy Education Profession.
Grant, Rachel A.; Wong, Shelley D.
Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy, v46 n5 p386-94 Feb 2003
Argues that two barriers to literacy are the failure of teacher-education programs to adequately prepare reading specialists to work with language-minority learners and of education researchers to engage in more substantive research on English reading development for such students. Points out the barriers that exist within the literacy education profession that may slow or even prevent language-minority learners from becoming fully literate in English. (SG)
