To Set an Example: The Tradition of Diversity at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Jewell, Joseph O.
Urban Education, v37 n1 p7-21 Jan 2002
Maps the evolution of a pioneering tradition of diversity at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) from the late 19th century to the present. Asserts that social and educational environments traditionally supporting diversity at HBCUs emerged out of group struggle between blacks and their allies as well as with those seeking to maintain the larger system of overt, institutionalized racial stratification that dominated U.S. society for much of its history.
