Phoneme Awareness and Pathways into Literacy: A Comparison of German and American Children.
Mann, Virginia; Wimmer, Heinz
Reading and Writing: An Interdisciplinary Journal, v15 n7-8 p653-82 Dec 2002
Administers two tests of phoneme awareness to kindergarten-, first- and second-grade children in Germany and America as a probe to the consequences of pedagogical differences on the emergence of phoneme awareness. Finds that the contrast between the American and German kindergarteners and the equivalence of the first and second graders in the two countries are consistent with a view that phoneme awareness develops primarily as a product of literacy exposure.
