Knowledge Management in Communities of Practice: Being True to the Communicative Character of Knowledge.
Iverson, Joel O.; McPhee, Robert D.
Management Communication Quarterly, v16 n2 p259-66 Nov 2002
Offers communities of practice (COPs) as a theoretical construct for understanding the interactive roles of information systems and people and also as a model for understanding how knowledge management is negotiated communicatively between people. Argues that the three key elements of COPs--mutual engagement, shared repertoire, and joint enterprise--encapsulate the socially constructed nature of knowledge creation, transfer, and management systems within and across organizations.
