Employs the concept of discursive positioning to explore the narrative construction of professional identities among women engineers. Provides an analysis of interviews with 15 women engineers which suggested that they adopt a variety of distinct and contradictory positionings to present themselves as qualified professionals. Proposes that including and examining female engineers' self-determined identities will result in a more adequately complex description of their work realities. (PM)
