Investigated African American students' perceptions of urban teaching practices and learning environments. Data from student interviews highlighted three central teaching strategies that students believed had a positive impact: teachers who established family, community, and home-like characteristics; teachers who established culturally connected caring relationships with students; and use of certain types of verbal communication and affirmation.
