He Who Hesitates: Hesitation Phenomena as Quality Control in Speech Production, Obstacles in Non-Native Speech Perception.
Reed, Marnie
Journal of Education, v182 n3 p67-91 2000
Investigated the nature and occurrence of hesitation phenomena in spontaneous speech among native and non-native English speakers, noting whether they posed perception problems for non-native speakers in normal spontaneous speech. Qualitative analysis revealed that they were ubiquitous in native and non-native speech production. Qualitative analysis based on a content-processing classification framework revealed their functions as quality control devices to forestall or repair errors. (SM)
