Efficiency and Robustness of Alternative Estimators for Two- and Three-Level Models: The Case of NAEP.
Cheong, Yuk Fai; Fotiu, Randall P.; Raudenbush, Stephen W.
Journal of Educational and Behavioral Statistics, v26 n4 p411-29 Win 2001
Studied the efficiency and robustness of alternative estimators of regression coefficients for three-level data. A simulation study shows that, as expected, the hierarchical model analyses produced more efficient point estimates than did analyses that ignored the covariance structure in the data, even when the normality assumption was violated. Discusses implications of the results for analyzing large-scale survey data. (SLD)
