Parents' Explanations of Their Child's Performance in Mathematics and Reading: A Replication and Extension of Yee and Eccles.
Raty, Hannu; Vanska, Johanna; Kasanen, Kati; Karkkainen, Riitta
Sex Roles: A Journal of Research, v46 n3-4 p121-28 Feb 2002
Investigated Finnish parents' explanations of their young children's reading and mathematics achievement, noting whether child gender influenced parent assessment. Parent surveys indicated that parents of boys assessed their children's mathematical competence to be higher than did parents of girls. The opposite was true for reading. For boys, the main explanation for success was ability, whereas for girls it was effort. (SM)
