Language Preference and Drug Use among Southwestern Mexican American Middle School Students.
Marsiglia, Flavio Francisco; Waller, Margaret
Children & Schools, v24 n3 p145-58 Jul 2002
Explores the drug use patterns of a sample of Southwestern Mexican American middle school students using language preference as a marker of acculturation status. Spanish monolingual students were found to use significantly less alcohol and other drugs than bilingual or English dominant students. Recommendations for social work practice are framed within the identified language and acculturation continuum. (Contains 47 references and 2 tables.) (GCP)
