Perceived Control of Anxiety and Its Relationship to Self-Confidence and Performance.
Hanton, Sheldon; Connaughton, Declan
Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, v73 n1 p87-97 Mar 2002
Investigated elite and subelite swimmers' retrospective perceptions and causal beliefs about the link between anxiety symptoms and performance and the underlying mechanisms involved. Interview data indicated that perceived control was the moderating factor in the directional interpretation of anxiety and not the experience of anxiety symptoms alone. Increases or decreases in self-confidence were perceived to improve or lower performance. (SM)
