Preschoolers Are Sensitive to the Speaker's Knowledge When Learning Proper Names.
Birch, Susan A. J.; Bloom, Paul
Child Development, v73 n2 p434-44 Mar-Apr 2002
Two experiments examined young children's use of the familiarity principle when learning language. Found that even 2-year-olds successfully identified the referent of a proper name as the individual with whom the speaker was familiar. However, only 5-year-olds reliably succeeded at determining the individual with whom the speaker was familiar based on the speaker's knowledge of an individual's proper name. (Author/KB)
